How to make a Graceful Cookie Valentine

Your heart is Graceful… a sweet sentiment for a special Valentine. My inspiration behind this is based from 2 Corinthians 9:8 “God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that in all things, at all times, having all that you need, you will overflow in every good work”
For the special people in my life this year, I made a lovely batch of heart shaped sugar cookies dipped in royal icing. Then placed each cookie into a translucent vellum paper square envelope (inspired by Jackie on the blog Finding Lovely). Each gift packet is wax sealed with flower petals and a “graceful heart” card is attached with a white velvet bow. I love how it turned out, especially the gentle reminder of how a graceful heart overflows into acts of kindness towards others.

To create my Valentine cookies, I used my mom’s sugar cookie recipe (it’s the best!) which she lovingly shared with me years ago. When the time is right, I will pass this to my daughter as our family tradition. When rolling out the dough, my marble rolling pin works wonderfully as it really helps keep the dough cool and stick-free. I also use a flexible rolling sheet. Not only does it provide the perfect working space (and grid) for rolling out dough, but it also protects my countertop. The best part is that it cleans easily and rolls up for storage. This one was a great find!

Time for the icing
For the icing, I simply dipped them using Martha Stewarts Royal icing recipe. Each cookie is carefully “dipped” into a thinned version of Martha’s recipe. To thin this recipe for dipping, simply add a little extra water until the icing is thin enough to dip. The excess icing drips back to the bowl.

If you experience air holes after dipping. Try smoothing them with a toothpick or special icing tool. You will have plenty of time to perfect your cookie before the icing begins to set. Rest the iced cookie on a wire rack for several hours or until the icing hardens. At this point you can decorate further as you desire. Personally I love the simplicity of the simple white icing.

Create a Valentine
Create a card or download and print my design here as shown. It is a pretty shade of duck egg blue with “your heart is graceful” on the front. If desired you can flip the printed front on your printer and include the verse on the back. Download the “Your Heart is graceful” card (front) Download the 2 Cor 9:8 card (back).
When the icing is well set, place one cookie in each 5×5 vellum bag. Then attach the “graceful” card to each using a hole punch and ribbon.

As an optional sweet touch, you can add a wax seal to the back of the envelope. I like to use silk flower petals with clear wax and round blank wax sealer.

I hope you enjoy creating this sweet valentine gift!
