It’s that time of year again and a mixture of emotions fills my soul. On one hand a large sense of relief (and exhale) for the accomplishment of once again getting through the holidays, yet on the other hand a sense of disappointment, even sadness that the holidays are completed. Can anyone else relate?
Time to gather and store away for next year…
For years I procrastinated on the idea of storage solutions and containers for Christmas/holiday decor; deciding instead to re-use amazon shipping boxes and shopping bags to store my little decorating treasures. In my mind, the expense of actual storage items seemed frivolous. However, after many years of boxing and unboxing, taping shut and cutting open, the realization became clear that a solution was needed. Not only to provide ease in access, but to protect our lovely and endearing family heirlooms.
A few of years ago I finally made the spending decision to purchase several holiday bins, wreath holders, etc… and have never looked back! Not a single moment have I regretted purchasing these specialized holiday storage containers, they have been worth every penny. The ease of opening, closing, and protecting my family’s treasured heirlooms has been thoroughly appreciated. Not too mention, the container’s holiday patterns make them easy to organize (and recognize) in my attic.
Each year I add a little more to my holiday organization efforts with a new container (or idea). This year I am investing in a dedicated rack, which will hold many of my packed away pretties stored safe for next year.
My tried and true holiday storage tips:
1. Acid Free Tissue Paper
My first suggestion (a tip I have learned the hard way) is to wrap and store holiday decor and ornaments using Acid Free Tissue Paper. Unlike regular tissue paper, this type of paper is free from harmful acids, making it ideal for preserving delicate items which prevents yellowing and deterioration over time.
2. Ornament Storage Containers
When it comes to keeping your holiday ornaments safe and organized, choosing the right storage containers is essential. While there are many types to choose from, I am really happy with my small investment of this padded divider ornament box. The dividers help prevent breakage and keep similar items grouped together. It also helps protect my delicate ornaments from dust and moisture.
Simply wrap each ornament with the acid free tissue paper, and tuck neatly into its cardboard cell (which are adjustable for size). By taking an extra step of care, you can ensure your holiday ornaments remain in pristine condition for years to come.
3. Storage Bins
Storage bins are a versatile and practical solution for organizing and storing your holiday lovelies. They come in different sizes, shapes, and materials. I use clear plastic totes which were found on Amazon and have been very happy with them. I especially like the visibility to see what is inside the bin, without having to open it.
4. Wrapping Paper Caddy
A wrapping paper caddy is an essential organizational tool designed to store and manage your wrapping paper, making gift wrapping a breeze. It saves space while being completely portable so I can move it from room to room as needed. The caddy I use has a large area for several rolls of wrapping paper, separate areas for ribbon, tape, tags, pen, etc… and plenty of pockets. I find it significantly reduces clutter and saves me precious time during the busy season, then stores all perfectly for next year.
5. Wreath Storage Containers
Storing wreaths properly is crucial for maintaining their shape and beauty. I use both hard case wreath containers, and soft case wreath containers. Both work well for my storage needs. These storage options will help ensure that your wreaths remain in good condition for years to come, ready to adorn your doors or walls.
5. Organizer Rack (re-purposed clothes rack)
This year I plan to invest in a organizer rack to help store our holiday decor. Not only will this be fantastic for storage, but it will keep everything neat and tidy.
6. Multi-tier hangers
Use multi-tier hangers on your organizer rack (or closet space) to wrap and store strings of lights and garlands. This keeps them tangle free and uses verticle space to store.
7. Bedding and Linens Storage Containers
When it comes to organizing and storing seasonal bedding and linens, Vacuum Sealed Bags are very helpful. I like them because of their ability to preserve my bedding by keeping them fresh, clean, and ready for use. They also significantly reducing volume to maximize storage space.
ng the right storage containers, you can keep your bedding and linens organized, easily accessible, and in pristine condition.
8. Label Everything!
This year I purchased a label printer which is perfect for keeping track of my decor and where it is located. Quick notes to myself along with an overview of what been placed in the bin or box. It has been a fantastic find well worth every penny.
A few additional tips for holiday decoration storage:
- Use Clear Bins: Opt for transparent storage bins. This makes it easy to find decorations without rifling through multiple boxes.
- Label Everything: Clearly label each container with its contents and the season or occasion. This helps with quick access when needed. I love using my label maker for this task.
- Prioritize Vertical Space: Utilize shelves and vertical storage solutions to maximize space.
- Use Dividers: Inside boxes or bins, use dividers to keep smaller items organized and prevent them from mixing.
- Use Clear plastic 1 gallon storage bags: These can help organize and store other decorations.
- Maintenance Check: Regularly check on your stored decorations to clean them and ensure they remain in good condition.
- Consider Climate: Store decorations in a climate-controlled environment to prevent damage from humidity or temperature extremes.
My holiday treasures are now safely stored and ready for use next year.
